The interior architecture concept of the Estonian Children’s Literature Centre, “Our Stories and Pictures,” creates a playful, child-centred environment where the world of children’s literature unfolds through space, exploration, and storytelling. The exhibition does not follow a linear path — children can move back and forth through stories, explore freely, and reinterpret them through their own experiences.
The three floors of the building form a continuous narrative:
-
The 1st floor is the starting point of stories and a source of inspiration,
-
The 2nd floor reveals the behind-the-scenes process of how books are created,
-
The 3rd floor is a creative attic where experiences transform into new forms through imagination and role play.
At the heart of the exhibition is the fairytale room, which explores the roots of children’s literature in folk and fairytales. Visitors enter through a playful, castle-like foyer, opening into a calm and mystical forest environment. A moss-green floor, a winding mirrored river, felt stone stools, and soft lighting create a space that supports focus and imagination. Forest-themed cabinets conceal reading nests, peepholes, and fairytale details, inviting children to explore and tell their own stories.
The fairytale room is a place where nature, light, and imagination meet — so that every child’s own story can begin.
